The second season of the Yellowstone prequel will end with an explosive two-hour finale event — double its usual running time — when it releases Sunday, April 6, on Paramount+

Paramount+ had not confirmed an episode count when announcing the second season of the prequel series. Season one had eight episodes. All season two episodes are written by creator Sheridan and directed by Ben Richardson.

The season two finale, titled “A Dream and a Memory,” follows a killing spree in the penultimate episode. That episode, titled “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,” carried with it a body count of seven dead characters: One Dutton was tragically shot dead during an unsuspecting encounter; two villains were savagely and deservedly killed, leaving two other heartbreaking deaths in their wake; and the couple helping Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) during her harrowing journey to Montana froze to death, leaving Alex in her most perilous situation yet heading into the finale.

Here’s the logline for the season two finale: “Jacob [Harrison Ford] and his crew eagerly await Spencer’s [Brandon Sklenar] return at the train station. Teonna [Aminah Nieves] has a fateful run in. Alexandra [Schlaepfer] braves the cold.”

News of 1923’s supersized event follows Sheridan’s supersized Yellowstone season 5B ending, which he also directed. The future of the Yellowstone franchise is bright and filled with multiple spinoffs in its stable (including one for Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s Beth and Rip), but the Dutton flagship series remains up in the air about if that epic finale functioned as a season or series ender.

1923, meanwhile, has been a ratings hit for the streamer. The season two premiere delivered 17 million global viewers and the second season is on track to outpace the first in viewership by 56 percent, per the streamer.

From Yellowstone co-creator Sheridan, 1923 stars Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford alongside an impressive ensemble that also includes Brandon Sklenar, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Brian Geraghty, Aminah Nieves, Michelle Randolph, Sebastian Roché, Timothy Dalton and Jennifer Carpenter.

Sklenar has said he’s always known how 1923 would end. “It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read in my life, truly,” he previously told The Hollywood Reporter of the season two finale. Paramount+ has not confirmed if season two will be the final season of 1923.
