Showrunner Taylor Sheridan developed the cowboy-centered series that ran for five seasons on the Paramount Network from 2018 to 2024, honing in on the conflicts inching along the borders of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch of Montana. Amid the success of that initial series, Sheridan created two prequel series, 1883 and 1923, with even more spinoffs on the way.

The one-season 1883 tracked the Dutton family’s flight from Texas to Montana, with the cast helmed by country music superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. In 1923, Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford portray Cara and Jacob Dutton as the family undergoes the physical and financial hardships of the Great Depression, Prohibition and an ongoing drought.

Now, CBS is reportedly developing a series centered around Kayce Dutton, the youngest member of the Dutton family, portrayed by actor Luke Grimes. Entertainment outlet TVLine reported the latest project will be a procedural series tracking Kayce Dutton’s life after moving on from the family ranch.

Sheridan’s development of the Yellowstone universe pays tribute to his own experiences growing up in the Lone Star State, where he was raised in Fort Worth and later attended Texas State University before dropping out. Many of his projects have filmed throughout Texas, including shoots in San Antonio, Austin and Lockhart.

‘1923’
While 1883 was a self-contained, one-season series, a second season of 1923 premiered in February and is set to conclude on April 13. While originally billed as a limited series, Paramount has not officially confirmed whether or not the series will continue with a third season, according to TV Insider. However, 1923 star Brandon Sklenar told the Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that the second season would be its last, with both the first and second seasons comprising “one piece.”

“No, no, it’s bookend. It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude,” Sklenar said at the time.

‘The Madison’
Other series in development include The Madison, an upcoming project anchored by actress Michelle Pfeiffer that will follow the McIntosh family’s relocation from New York City to central Montana. Paramount unveiled that series plan in May 2023, and principal photography began in 2024. There is no official premiere date yet but reports suggest a late 2025 debut.

‘Beth & Rip’, ‘1944’, and ‘6666’
Another prequel reportedly in development is 1944, which as the title suggests would follow the Dutton family in the years following the events of 1923. Production details or a release date have yet to be announced, according to Esquire. The same goes for the spinoff centered around Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, the daughter and son-in-law of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.

As for a potential 6666 breakout series, Esquire reported that show would focus on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, which is owned by Sheridan and was featured in Yellowstone, but questions remain as to whether it’ll come to fruition and if so, when it’ll be released.

Last fall, Sheridan joined Houston-born actor Dennis Quaid to advocate in front of the Texas Senate Committee on Finance, calling for bolstered incentives to the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program. The duo called on the increased incentives to improve the Lone Star State’s competitiveness against rival filming states like Georgia and New Mexico.

Yellowstone is available for streaming on Peacock, while its prequel series can be streamed on Paramount+.
