When the 1923 season finale premiered this past weekend, fans were heartbroken to part ways with one of the most beloved chapters in the Dutton family saga. But all hope may not be lost—especially when it comes to the fate of Spencer Dutton.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, 1923 star Sklenar shared his excitement about potentially reprising his role in future installments of the series. He even welcomed the idea of aging into the part should the story continue.

“Give me some gout, a little hunch and some salt and pepper,” he joked. “I’ll gravel the voice up a bit. If it comes around, I’d love to do it. I really would. I definitely don’t want to say goodbye to Spencer. I love that guy.”

The finale also seemed to answer a long-standing question about the Dutton family tree: the origin of John Dutton III, played by Kevin Costner in Yellowstone. With the premature birth of Spencer and Alexandra’s son, John Dutton II, it appeared to confirm Spencer as John III’s grandfather. But according to Sklenar, that link isn’t quite official—at least, not yet.

“One would assume what it is at the end of the finale, but it still hasn’t been confirmed,” he told THR. “So I guess we’ll have to wait for [the next prequel series] 1944. Hopefully, they’ll reveal that in the first episode and we won’t have to wait an entire series for confirmation.”

For now, Sklenar says he’s focused on looking back, taking time to reflect on his experience with 1923 and the personal growth he found through playing Spencer Dutton.

“It was incredibly emotional for a number of reasons. I was closing the book on that chapter of my life and then I was processing the last three years and the effect that it’s had on me. It was emotional, but not necessarily sad,” Sklenar said about wrapping up the season. “There’s a lot of energy moving through you when you culminate something that significant in your life. And then when you tack on what Spencer’s dealing with in the story and the loss and the regret. It’s very painful that he’ll never get to carry out the amount of love that he has.”
