This story contains spoilers for the 1923 season 2 finale.
Before Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) finally made it back home, 1923 season 3 seemed inevitable. Then Taylor Sheridan gifted viewers a two-hour season finale. As promised, the Yellowstone writer told the second half of a two-part epic. Though Spencer was still a hundred miles away from the Yellowstone ranch in Montana when the finale began, the Dutton hero saved the day. Still, 1923’s finale doesn’t mean our Dutton-family story is over.
Here’s what we know so far. Originally, Sheridan revealed that he would need two seasons to tell the full tale. Much like the Yellowstone season 5 finale, however, Paramount is leaving the door open for more. Sheridan is reportedly working away at a sequel spin-off titled 1944. The series will likely follow all new characters, including the newly confirmed Dutton family member John Dutton Jr. Since the story takes place only 20 years after 1923, it’s also possible that Spencer (Sklenar) makes another appearance.

In our interview with Sklenar before the season 2 premiere, the actor stated that he would love to continue working with Sheridan. “For [Sheridan] to put that faith in me to play this incredible character he wrote, I’ll forever be in debt to him,” he said. “I’m just so honored that I got to do it and hopefully continue to do it.”
Knowing Sheridan, anything’s possible.

Will There Be a 1923 Season 3?
Definitely not! Following the 1923 season 2 finale, I can safely say the story is over. Plus, Sklenar confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023 that season 2 would complete this particular chapter of the Dutton saga. “I think of it as one piece—there’s just a split in the middle,” he said. “It will conclude.” True to his word, 1923 is over.
Outside of the 1920s, there’s still plenty of Yellowstone headed our way. Three spin-offs are currently in development, according to sources. The Madison, starring Matthew Fox and Michelle Pfeiffer, is the only upcoming title that Paramount confirmed so far. There’s also a spin-off starring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly that is rumored to start production soon. That untitled Yellowstone series will air on Paramount+ and continue the story of Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton. Plus, there are rumors of a Luke Grimes spin-off for CBS. Just sit tight and take in those Yellowstone views for now, cowboys.
