Coronation Street’s Jonathan Howard, who plays Carl Webster, has hinted at some surprising developments for his character in the beloved ITV soap. Carl, who first appeared on our screens in April, is the half-brother of Weatherfield icon Kevin Webster and has been involved in the action ever since his arrival.

His entrance onto the street was anything but subtle when he encountered Kevin’s partner, Abi Franklin (Sally Carman).

It was evident there was a spark between them, although they were blissfully unaware that they were actually siblings-in-law.

Despite the apparent romantic tension between them, they’ve been attempting to keep their distance.

In recent weeks, Carl has once again found himself in the midst of drama as he becomes involved with Fiona (Sara Poyzer) and assists her in selling stolen vehicles. In return for cash, Carl has been utilising his brother’s garage to conduct deals for Fiona.

Giving fans a sneak peek into what lies ahead for his contentious character, Jonathan told Inside Soap magazine: “He’s going to do a few things that will take people by surprise. It’s good to keep the audience on their toes as to who Carl is, because he has just appeared out of nowhere!”

Although his name has been mentioned in passing on the soap over the years, it’s only now — at the age of 38 — that Carl has finally made his debut on the street.

The character was born in 1986 to Bill (father of Kevin and Debbie Webster) and Elaine Webster, and spent his childhood in Germany. Despite Bill’s eventual return to the cobbles, he left Carl in Germany with his mother after their divorce.

Beyond his recent stint on Corrie, audiences might recall Jonathan for his portrayal of Gavin Moody in the Sky series Dream Team, which ran from 1997 until 2007.

Since then, his television career has flourished, with appearances in Downton Abbey and Holby City.

Perhaps most notably, in 2013, he was cast as Ian Boothby in Thor: The Dark World, and returned to the big screen six years later in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Coronation Street returns tonight (June 30) at 8 p.m. on ITV.
