Coronation Street’s Sue Cleaver says one co-star ‘impossible’ to work with

Sue Cleaver, a stalwart of the ITV soap Coronation Street, where she has brought Eileen Grimshaw to life for over two decades, is set to hang up her Weatherfield coat.

Recalling her journey on the show during a chat on Off Script podcast, Sue dished out some laughter-filled tales from behind the scenes, which contrast with some of the darker storylines she’s been part of, like the tragic plotline involving Eileen’s sister Julie Carp’s death, portrayed by Katy Cavanagh.

Despite the grim narratives, she admitted that there were times when she couldn’t contain her giggles during wholly “inappropriate” situations.

Among the memories, she regaled listeners with a particularly hilarious instance involving co-star Katy Cavanagh, saying: “I laughed with Katy Cavanagh when she was dead on the floor, bless her heart.”

The guffaw was triggered when one of Sue’s tears took an accidental detour into Katy’s nose — a welcome intrusion of hilarity in the sorrowful scene, reports Leicestershire Live.

Express-counted among the causes of on-set merriment is Sue’s fellow actor Simon Gregson, famous as Steve McDonald. She mentioned how he is “impossible” to act alongside without breaking down into fits of laughter since they both struggle to maintain composure.

Behind the familiar desk at Street Cars taxi service, lies a prop diary that fans would believe is filled with cab bookings and schedules. But Sue revealed it actually hosts a collection of rather risqué jokes instead of mundane dispatch notes.

Sue disclosed to her fans: “We have a diary where we can be seen writing little notes. Really what is in that book is the most disgusting photographs of ‘Sue by Simon, aged 4.'”.

Not one to miss out on the fun, Sue recounted with a chuckle how she had gotten back at Simon with an equally playful jest, only for their diary to one day “mysteriously” vanish, seemingly to prevent any possible embarrassment if it were ever found.

Opening up about her upcoming departure from the show, Sue gave a heartfelt and candid reflection on her final moments that viewers are set to witness in the upcoming weeks.

“I can’t give anything away, but it’s absolutely fabulous. They really did me proud,” she shared, while keeping the details a mystery.

With evident emotion, Sue continued: “When I read it and saw it, I was really emotional. It’s the perfect ending. It is everything that I wanted. They asked me what I would like, and I decided a year ago that I was gonna go.”

She further spilled the beans on Ryan Thomas making a return as her on-screen son Jason for her leaving episodes.

Expressing her thoughts on this, she said: “I called Ryan Thomas and said, ‘Ryan, I’ve not told work yet, but I’m gonna leave. Would you come back?

Ryan’s response?

‘I wasn’t planning to, but I can’t refuse that, can I?’ For Sue, having Ryan present was the perfect send-off.
