IT WILL SHOCK YOU!! SWAT spinoff has officially begun casting for 5 new characters

We’re coming up on two whole months since SWAT ended its run on CBS, and the anticipation for what’s coming next is only growing. Back in May 2025, Sony Pictures Television announced that a brand-new spinoff series titled SWAT Exiles was officially in development, with Shemar Moore set to reprise his role as Sergeant II Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr.

Now, more details are starting to surface as the project gains momentum. According to TVLine’s Chief Content Officer Matt Webb Mitovich, he has learned from insiders that casting is officially underway. While no official cast members have been announced yet besides Moore, Mitovich says the casting team is seeking to fill five new character roles, each with distinct and interesting backgrounds.

Here’s a breakdown of each character via TVLine:

  • A charismatic, Black former Marine from South Central.
  • An undercover cop with a questionable shooting in his past.
  • An amputee who was at the top of her class at the academy and refuses to ride a desk.
  • A tactical prodigy with disruptive social skills.
  • A former beauty queen who now works as a law enforcement “influencer.”

It’ll be interesting to see who ends up being cast in each role. We can already picture a number of skilled actors who would be ideal choices, but we have faith that the casting team will find the perfect talent to bring these characters to life.

As reported by Mitovich, the cameras are set to start rolling on SWAT Exiles in Los Angeles in mid-September. The entire production crew from the original series is confirmed to come back to work on the spinoff. While there have been talks by higher-ups about there potentially being other SWAT cast members returning for the spinoff, nothing has been confirmed yet.

However, fans remain hopeful that more familiar faces will make appearances. Perhaps we could see Hondo’s confidant and long-time friend, Sergeant II David “Deacon” Kay (Jay Harrington), make a cameo or even take on a recurring role. I’m sure Harrington would be open to returning in some capacity, especially since he and Moore are close friends in real life. Or maybe David Lim, who played Officer Victor Tan in SWAT, might want to drop by the spinoff as well. Either way, these potential guest appearances would be a welcome treat for longtime fans.

SWAT Exiles does not currently have a streaming home or network. The first season will be made up of 10 episodes. Given this episode count, the spinoff would work well on a streaming platform since shorter seasons are often favored by streaming services. Maybe Paramount+ or Netflix will step in to pick up the series, but we’ll just have to wait and see. The spinoff revolves around Hondo as he comes out of retirement to lead a new SWAT unit comprised of young recruits.
