After CBS announced that the actor would return as Kayce Dutton in a brand-new Yellowstone spinoff series that has a working title of Y: Marshals, Grimes reacted to the news on Instagram.

“Cowboys dont say goodbye, they say see you later,” Grimes captioned the post, which contained a screenshot of a Deadline article about the news.

Y: Marshals is slated to premiere midseason next year.

According to the show’s official logline, Y: Marshals will see Kayce Dutton “join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

As fans may remember, during the December 2024 series finale of Yellowstone, Kayce, the youngest child of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, saved Yellowstone Ranch by selling the land to Broken Rock Reservation.

News of the spinoff may not come as a complete surprise to the show’s fans, as Grimes never completely closed the door to a new chapter in his character’s story.

“I think when anything is this successful, there’s a pressure to keep it going because they know they have an audience and that’s what they’re looking for,” he told PEOPLE in a November 2024 conversation. “But it all comes down to [Yellowstone creator] Taylor [Sheridan’s] vision. He has to see it to be able to write it, and I don’t think he’s going to write something that he doesn’t want to.”

“Basically we’re just going to see if Taylor has an idea that he gets excited about, and that’s going to make all the difference here,” he added.

Yellowstone is now streaming on Peacock. The franchise’s earlier spinoffs – 1923 and 1883 – are streaming on Paramount+.
