The Duttons aren’t riding off into the sunset just yet. The Yellowstone universe is officially expanding again with CBS confirming a new spinoff starring fan favorite Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes. So, what can Yellowstone fans expect next?
Rumors started circulating in March and now, the spinoff has now received a 13-episode order from CBS, according to Variety. In contrast to other Yellowstone spinoffs, the new series, titled Y: Marshals, will air on network TV rather than Paramount+. Filming is set to begin this summer, with a Sunday night premiere planned for midseason 2026.
Fans likely remember the super-sized finale of the flagship series in late 2024. In the final episode, Kayce Dutton chose to sell the Yellowstone ranch to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Indian Reservation following patriarch John Dutton’s death. Kayce did retain a small part of the ranch, though, so that his family could begin a new life. This fresh start, as well as Kayce’s background as a former Navy SEAL, could serve as the basis for the series.

As outlined in CBS’s official summary: “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Taylor Sheridan and David C. Glasser will serve as executive producers for the Y: Marshals spinoff, produced by MTV Entertainment Studios. Joining them as executive producers are Spencer Hudnut, who will also act as showrunner and writer, along with Luke Grimes, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari. This one-hour drama will be distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution, continuing the success of the Yellowstone franchise.
The project would be the latest expansion of the Yellowstone universe since the original show concluded. Previously, reports confirmed that Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly would reprise their roles as Rip and Beth in a separate spinoff that’s also currently in development.
This is in addition to prequels 1883 and 1923, which you can watch now. There’s also news of an upcoming sister series, The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer. Regardless of the future for this beloved franchise, one thing’s for sure: Taylor Sheridan isn’t done telling stories from the wild, wild West.
