C21 Media has reported that Territory has been canceled at Netflix after one season. Reportedly, the plan was to continue with a second season, which makes sense, given how the freshman season concluded with a cliffhanger ending. The cast and crew were informed weeks ago that Territory wouldn’t be getting a second season, and Netflix has now confirmed the news after the news started hitting the press.

A cowboy in Territory
“We are incredibly thankful to have had the chance to work with the wonderful cast and production team to bring Territory and the stunning Australian outback into the homes of millions around the world,” reads a statement by Que Min Luu, Netflix’s director of content for Australia and New Zealand. “Although we won’t be continuing with another season, we eagerly anticipate working with all of them again in the future.”

As for why Territory was canceled, the new report suggested that it’s likely due to production timing and scheduling issues, but no definitive reason was offered by the streamer. It’s a disappointing development for Australian creatives, as Netflix had seemingly emerged as an outlet for filmmakers to go with their stories if they couldn’t physically work on projects in Hollywood.
“[Australian creatives can] tell their incredible stories right here in Australia,” Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said in Sydney when the series launched last year. “They don’t need to go to Hollywood, they don’t need to go somewhere else, but they can tell hugely ambitious stories, authentic stories at significant scale right here, and we will help them find an amazing audience in Australia, in New Zealand, and around the world.”
Territory Is a One-Season Series
The show was created by Ben Davies and Timothy Lee with Greg McLean serving as director. Consisting of six episodes, the show focuses on Marianne Station, the world’s largest cattle station, which is owned by the Lawson family. When one member of the family who was managing the station dies in a suspicious accident, a major battle for succession ensues. Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, Robert Taylor, and Sam Corlett starred.
The first and only season of Territory is streaming on Netflix.
