“I was convinced that I was going to die, so I was quite surprised I was still alive at the end of the show,” she laughed. And she’s not the only one still kicking, as Ford was happy to discuss.
“I’m still alive. I thought [the finale] was fantastic — I thought it was very tight storytelling and I was absolutely delighted with it. It’s probably the densest script and work that I’ve had a chance to work on in a long, long time.”
As for whether he’d ever return, Ford kept the door open — kind of.
“If [Sheridan] asks nice. I have no idea what his plans are.”
What Happened In The ‘1923’ Finale?
The 1923 finale delivered a devastating and pivotal twist: Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) finally reaches Montana and gives birth to her and Spencer’s (Brandon Sklenar) child — baby John — just before dying in childbirth. It’s a quiet, tragic moment that ties the Dutton lineage directly to the events of Yellowstone, something which Mirren reflected on when she looked back at the finale’s events.
“I love the fact that the future of Yellowstone is left in this tiny baby, in the arms of two older people, grandparents age. I thought that was a very interesting concept.”
Ford also looked back on Jacob’s darker side, highlighting what drew him to the role. “In the first episode, he hangs four men,” said Ford. “So I thought it was an opportunity to really invest in a very complicated characterization, because this is not a hero. This is a complicated man who does some bad shit and then goes on with his life.”
“It’s not a simple cowboys and Indians movie. It’s a really complicated story about a really complicated history… There’s a lot of incredibly searing detail in it that really fly in the face of Western mythology as it is, but we can see what comes out of it and why it persists.”
And though 1923 might be done, the Yellowstone-verse certainly isn’t. Sheridan is reportedly developing 1944, the next prequel in the timeline. If that series centers around a young John Dutton II, it could offer the chance for returning characters in flashbacks, cameos, or anything else that they might settle on.
