Fans of Yellowstone were left reeling when news spread that Kevin Costner, the very soul of the dramatic western series, would exit his acclaimed role as patriarch John Dutton.

In anticipation of season five’s arrival, Costner made it clear he’d be hanging up his cowboy hat as Dutton to devote time to his cinematic pursuits.

Since then, whispers of tension between Costner and series mastermind Taylor Sheridan filled the air, but both have since squashed such hearsay.

However, in a recent Entertainment Tonight interview, Costner quipped about the show’s tone, remarking: “Well it’s modern day ranching. Yellowstone was able to capture that really so beautifully.

“I mean, it’s a bit of a soap opera. I mean, we all should be in prison.”

Addressing the show with the Daily Mail, he revealed: “I’m not thinking about [the Yellowstone finale], I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts, we’ll just let it go.”

This stance seems to signal Costner’s definitive step away from the Yellowstone narrative.

Moreover, he and Sheridan have openly denied any discord, particularly over Costner’s involvement in the movie project Horizon.

Sheridan shared with The Hollywood Reporter his perspective on their professional rapport: “I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone… Once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting.”

Kevin’s lawyer, Marty Singer, also joined in refuting the allegations, stating that claims Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of season five of Yellowstone were “an absolute lie”.

“It’s ridiculous – and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second.”

Costner had previously expressed his admiration for the series, telling People: “I loved the show. I liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about.

“I love that world…I’ve always felt that…it might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family.

“And if that happens, I would step into it if I agreed with how it was being done.”
