“Yellowstone” Star Luke Grimes on Why the Show Is Special
Luke Grimes is stepping back into Kayce Dutton’s boots.
The Yellowstone actor—who portrayed the son of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III—will reprise his role from the flagship show in a new series tentatively titled Y: Marshalls, CBS has announced.
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals,” the network said in a May 7 statement, “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
The new Yellowstone spinoff—one of several in the hit franchise—is set to premiere on CBS in the 2025-26 midseason and air Sundays at 9 p.m. Grimes and franchise creator Taylor Sheridan will both serve as executive producers along with several others, including Spencer Hudnut, who will also work as the showrunner.
“Cowboys dont say goodbye,” Grimes wrote May 7 on his Instagram about the new series, “they say see you later.”
The actor played Kayce on all five seasons of Yellowstone, which ended its run last December. The 41-year-old—who is also a singer—is also known for his past acting roles in the movies American Sniper, Taken 2 and the Fifty Shades trilogy, as well as shows such as Brothers and Sisters and True Blood.

In 2022, Grimes shared with E! News what he believes makes Yellowstone a phenomenon.
“I think it starts with the writing,” he said on the red carpet at the SAG Awards. “Taylor Sheridan is an incredible writer. And then from there, it’s just the passion of all the cast and crew and the people who work tirelessly to make it what it is and I think it really resonates with people.”
